General Information about Reiki

What is Reiki?

The name Reiki, pronounced ‘’Ray-key'’, comes from the Japanese words ‘’rei'’ meaning spirit, and ‘’ki'’ meaning life force energy. It is usually translated as ‘’Universal Life Force Energy.'’ This life force energy can be defined as energy in all created matter. “Ki” is similar in thought to “chi” or “qi” in Chinese medicine, Hindu “prana” and Christian “light.”

Reiki is one of the more widely known forms of energy healing and involves direct application of Universal Life Force Energy for the purpose of strengthening the energy system.

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive holistic energy healing system that yields powerful results for the body, mind and spirit. When using Reiki to heal, the practitioner works with universal life force energy to restore the client’s energy centers (chakras) to their most natural state of flow. This process helps to restore and strengthen the whole system—mind, body, spirit—for wellness.

Reiki can do no harm. It always goes to the source of the problem and always works for the highest good.

Hospitals, medical offices, spas, and animal care providers across the country are using this thousand-year-old Eastern healing treatment in response to the growing understanding of Reiki as a powerful non-intrusive tool for health and longevity.

What does Reiki do?

Reiki heals, balances and harmonizes the body, mind and spirit. It is not uncommon for a person receiving Reiki for a physical ailment to experience a release and healing of unrelated spiritual, emotional or psychological concerns. Reiki heals on all levels.

How does Reiki heal?

Reiki heals by opening the subtle energy channels of the body by removing energy blockages so that the natural healing capabilities of the body are allowed to work unrestrained.

Reiki compliments and enhances standard medical treatment. Reiki can act as a catalyst to healing when the healing process of the individual is bogged down or at a standstill.

Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment nor is it a diagnostic tool.

The Science of Reiki:

All living and non-living objects possess an internal and external energy field. Reiki healing addresses the energetic field releasing blockages and restoring balance. Because Reiki is energy, it is not limited to time and space.

Energy Field Examples:

    • Living Objects - Scientists have proven that Human, Non-Human, and Plant kind possess a biomagnetic energy field. The energy field is created by the electrical currents from our cells. The electrical currents created at cellular level arise from metabolic and chemical processes.
    • Non-Living Objects- Quartz has unique properties such as piezoelectricity, energy storage and amplification abilities. It has helped humankind create many of our modern tools of technology, such as lasers, optics, computers, communication systems, radio, television, ultrasound and much more.

Energy Example:

    • Einstein’s theory of special relativity includes electricity and magnetism in a simple, logical extension of the relativity of Galileo and Newton. Its conclusions, including time dilation, length contraction, and E=mc2 have changed profoundly our ideas of time and space, matter and energy.

Is Reiki a Religion?

Reiki is not a religion or system of belief. Reiki is often called “spiritual healing” because it is not guided by the practitioner. The energy has its own innate wisdom to go where it is needed and do what is necessary to bring stabilization and healing. Likewise, Reiki is not “faith healing” because belief is not necessary for Reiki to be effective.

What is the history of Reiki?

Reiki’s tradition and history is oral and generally passed from Reiki Master to student during training. Some of the writings tell the story of how Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator, discovered the ancient healing art in Japan in the late 1800’s. His revelations paved the way for its emergence in the United States and the rest of the world. There are stories about the life and work of Dr. Usui or “sensei”(teacher) as he is affectionately called. Refer to Resources for recommended readings.

Based on ancient Buddhist and Hindu teachings, Dr. Usui evolved a system of healing through study, research, and meditation. He practiced and taught this method of natural healing using the laying on of hands. In the traditional Reiki lineage, he trained Chujiro Hayashi to continue his work after his death. Dr. Hayashi then opened a clinic and school in Tokyo where he trained his successor, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the mainland of the U.S. Between 1945 and 1970, she was the only living Reiki Master in the world. Between 1970 and 1980, she trained twenty-one Reiki Masters. Mrs. Takata’s granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto, is the currently the Grand Master of the Usui System of Natural Healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho).

Reiki is based on five spiritual principles:

  • Just for today, I will not worry
  • Just for today, I will not be angry
  • Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
  • Just for today, I will do my work honestly
  • Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing
